Best tips for finding cheap airfares to Europe
Some of the basics follow below. However, as airlines have so many unsold seats fares are incredibly cheap, the cardinal rule of booking as far in advance as possible is not necessarily true for the next few months..... if, you are flexible. Last minute, unsold seats are available but hard to find unless you got an inside track or know the tricks. That is what we focus on. We invented the Flight Pass in 1998 and now are developing new last minute 'airline clearance' products to offer you great prices. You'll discover these hidden airfare treasures listed on our Airline Clearance page as Red Tags and Insider fares. These incredibly low fares are for travelers whose itineraries are flexible, and those who love a bargain. We'll now, that includes all of us, doesn't it?
Now back to the normal rules for saving money.
The cheapest airfares to Europe are usually found if you depart from a major city, such as New York, Los Angles, Boston, Chicago, etc. If you live in Milwaukee, the drive to Chicago may be well worth the trip. Ditto if you live in San Diego, LA will offer more choices and likely cheaper airfares to Europe.
Check all airports in your departure and arrival city by using the generic city codes. Search using "NYC" to include both JFK and Newark (EWR), unless you really want JFK or EWR. The same is true in Europe:
LON will include Heathrow (LHR), Gatwick (GTW), Stansted (STN), Luton (LTN) and London City (LCY - our favorite. ROM will include both Fumicino (FCO) and Campino (CIA), both of which are close to the city. PAR will include both Charles deGaulle (CDG) and Orly (ORY)
BER for Berlin will include Tegel (TXL) Templehof (THF) Schoenefeld (SXF)
PAR will include both Charles deGaulle (CDG) and Orly (ORY)
NOTE Low cost airlines, such as RyanAir often fly into airports in the vicinity of major cities and use the name of the city itself. For example, RyanAir flights to ‘Brussels' use Charleroi (CRL) airport which is 39 miles from Brussels.
Be flexible in your travel dates. The best fares are usually available Tuesday through Thursday.
Airfares to and within Europe are cheapest off-peak, i.e., June, July and August are peak periods. September through October and March though May are called "shoulder months" and bargains are available. The cheapest flights are in the winter months. Winter fares are usually ½ the price of summer fares!
Look for cheap airfares by Asian carriers as they "hop scotch" between continents. Several carriers fly from Asia to New York via London or Paris. Their transatlantic fares may be the cheapest.
